Job Feature Series: Q&A With Worner Desk Employee Key Macfarland

Welcome to the Job Feature Series, a weekly column highlighting student workers around campus. This week, meet Key Macfarland ’22, one of the friendly faces behind the Worner desk. Note that this interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Who are you?

I’m Key Macfarland and I’m in the class of 2022.

Where do you work and how long have you worked there?

I work at the Worner desk. I started last spring, during my first year.

What do your shifts look like?

I usually work 12 – 2 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, which tends to be a pretty busy shift since everyone is coming out from lunch.

What do you do on a typical Worner desk shift?

The job entails a lot of helping people. I point people in the direction they need to go on campus, answer phone calls (when you call the CC phone number it’s directed to our desk), print out and take Gold Card photos, and answer any questions for people who come to the desk. We also have the keys to book a space in upstairs Worner, have a lost-and-found, and sell tickets for events like speakers, hockey games, or plays.

What’s the most complicated part of the job?

Learning how to close. You have to count the drawer, lock everything up and put all of the transactions made that day into the computer.

What is the worst part of your job?

If I don’t know something it can be kind of embarrassing. I hate not being able to help the customer and having to put them on hold.

What is your favorite part of the job?

I love my coworkers. I really like how much closer I feel to the CC community after I started working this job. Especially working NSO week — we were some of the first people to greet the first years and took their first Gold Card photo!

Is there anything else you would like to say about working at the Worner desk?

My boss Lynette is the heart of the Worner desk. She is the Worner Center Operations Manager. She has been there for so many years. She just knows everything about CC! She treats us all like family. If you’re ever going through a hard time, she is great at checking up on you. A huge part of the reason I love working at the Worner desk is because of her — she is so understanding and teaches us to learn from our mistakes.

Would you recommend this job to someone else?

Yes! Especially for first years trying to get to know the campus better because you have to answer so many questions. The community is lovely and it feels like a little family.
