Last week, President Jill Tiefenthaler announced that a candidate had been chosen to fill the role of Director of Athletics role. Lesley Irvine will be stepping into the role on June 1, 2019. She is the current Director of Athletics and Recreation and Chair of Physical Education at Pomona and Pitzer Colleges.
President Tiefenthaler’s announcement read, “I am excited to work with Lesley and to call upon her leadership as we plan and build Robson Arena, and work to enhance all of our athletics programs at Colorado College. Greg Capell will continue to serve as interim director of athletics until Lesley arrives, and I’m grateful for his dedication and commitment to our students, teams, coaches, and staff.”
Lesley brings years of experience to CC; as a successful coach and campus health and wellness advocate. Hailing from England, Irvine was an award-winning field hockey player at Loughborough University and the University of Iowa. At Pomona and Pitzer colleges, Irvine headed 21 intercollegiate athletics teams and their physical education curriculums. She successfully led the department to 15 conference championships across a handful of sports. Academics also were Irvine’s priority, and she led the athletics department to three straight SCIAC Conference All Academics Awards in 2016, 2017, 2018.
Before her time at Pomona, she spent five years as the associate Atheletic Director at Bowling Green University, helping oversee 21 sports. Before that, she spent nine years at Stanford University where she led their field hockey team to three straight conference championships. Irvine was a successful athlete herself, leading the University of Iowa in offensive points and to a Final Four and Big Ten Championship in Field Hockey.
After she graduated with a master’s degree in health, leisure, and sport studies, she traveled back home to England and attended Loughborough University, where she was a three-time national champion in outdoor field hockey and two-time national champion in indoor field hockey. She was eventually named to the England Under-18 and Under-21 squads of the England National Team. She graduated Loughborough University with a Bachelor of Science in PE, sports science, and sport management.
Irvine has extended her leadership into fundraising, helping raise $20 million for a new campus athletics and recreation building, as well as an athletics annual fund that has raised $1.25 million over the past three years. She has been active with student affairs, advancement, communication, and admissions at both Pomona and Pitzer.
Anne Goodman James, the Colorado College head Swimming Coach, was one of those people tasked with finding a new Athletic Director. “We had around ten candidates that were all excellent, but [Lesley] was just head and shoulders above the rest. We had to act fast to make sure we got her before anyone else did. I’m very excited to work with her in the near future.”
Lesley Irvine will finish the school year at Pomona and Pitzer before she takes charge here on campus June 1. Welcome, Lesley!
