Track & Field Kick off Season With School Records

The men’s and women’s track teams traveled to Long Beach, Calif. on March 2, for the Long Beach State Opener Meet. Despite a consistent downpour throughout the meet, the Tigers were able to power through with some great performances. For the first-years, it was a great opportunity to start off the season on of a high note, and many took the opportunity and ran with it, setting season and personal bests almost across the board.

Megan Koch ’22 and Lucy Wagner ’22 placed highly in the 1500 meter, with Koch finishing No. 10 with a time of 5:00.86, and Wagner finishing No. 16, just four seconds behind her teammate. Gillian Foley ’21 and Lee O’Dowd ’21 finished at No. 22 and 23, respectively, filling out a strong women’s 1500m. Wagner continued her great day by placing highly in the 3000m, along with her teammate Leah Veldhuisen ’19 only a few moments behind. In the field, Grace Tagtow ’22 scored at No. 8 in the high jump and completed the jumping “triple” in the long and triple jump, placing at No. 13 and 19, respectively.

The men competed well, especially Max Blackburn ’20, who set a new school record in the 3000m. He finished the race in 8:58.55, and teammate Tony Calderon ’20 was only a second behind, also beating the former record set by alumnus Nick Hall ’15 back in 2013.

The Tigers ran well in the 800m, with Josh Fry ’22 leading the way at No. 14, at 2:02.12, with teammates Paul Olsen ’21 and Josh Raizner ’20 finishing just behind him at No. 21 and 23. Olsen and Fry went on to compete in the 1500 meter, where they placed at No. 28 and 29, respectively. In the field, senior Henry Baldwin ’19 stole the show, finishing at No. 3 in the high jump, with a height of 6 feet 1.25 inches. The mark is one Baldwin will be improving on later in the season, as the school record holder made the NCAA DIII National Championships last year.

While the team is excited about a batch of great performances, these Tigers are hungry and look to improve on their marks when they head down to Colorado State University at Pueblo on March 15 for the Colorado State Univeristy Pueblo Early Bird Meet. Good luck, Tigers!
