What year are you and what is your major?
I am a senior and an IPE major.
What is it like living in the Wastement?
The Wastement is an awesome place to live. The lease is still open for next year, so if anyone wants to live there, they should apply. We have James Terhune who is our resident grandpa, Charley Bemis who is the hot dog guy of the house, Bonjamin Brown (that’s with an ‘o’), who is our resident musician and table destroyer, Danny Sponseler, who is the cross between Trey Anastasio skills and Jim Morrison’s sweet bod, and me, the house lawyer and financial advisor.
What’s the weirdest thing you have witnessed while living at the Wastement?
Most of the crazy stuff we probably can’t or don’t want to print in the Catalyst, but a couple of weeks ago, Charley ate six hot dogs in a row, then Ben Judo-chopped him in the stomach. It didn’t end well but I guess a man’s gotta eat, and sometimes a man needs to chop.
Is it ever annoying living at the Wastement?
No, not really. Only during fourth week when Danny and Ben are never in classes. They always have parties when you’re trying to sleep and study for finals. But no, it’s generally a really fun time.
What are your Block 8 goals?
Play golf a couple times, be outside for as much as I can, and stay up until 6 a.m. with the house a couple nights a week.
What are your plans for next year?
I am moving to San Francisco and starting a sales position at a tech company start up in June. I will be there indefinitely.
Who is your favorite hockey team? Who do you want to win the playoffs?
I wanted the St. Louis Blues to win it all, but they lost. Right now I think the New York Rangers will win. They have a strong team. It’s a long month of playoff hockey, so it will be fun to watch.
What was your best Block Break?
I have had so many good Block Breaks that I am not really sure. Last Block Break I was with a rafting crew of juniors and seniors. We got to Fruita and it started to blizzard, so we decided to drive down to the Grand Canyon. We had a big group of 30 or 40 people all hanging out in the Grand Canyon, drinking and being reckless. It was a pretty wild time. It was a great last Block Break.
Do you have any advice, as a senior about to graduate, for underclassmen at CC?
Talk to as many different people as you can your freshman and sophomore years. Try to be present on campus; don’t be a recluse in your dorm room or house or apartment. Don’t worry too much about your major; it’s all about what you do during your summers, and have a good time. Live at the Wastement your senior year. That will be the best time.
What is your favorite class that you have taken at CC? Do you have a favorite professor?
I am in a class with David Hendrickson in the Political Science department right now which I really like, called Smiling Through the Apocalypse. I have been with him a couple times in the last few years. I really enjoy how he approaches the class. He is really smart and also laidback, and one of the few professors that still takes his classes to his house. I think that is a really important part of the CC experience that has been lost in the last couple decades. He is a great Block 8 professor as well. We talk about all the stuff that can go wrong with the world and try to find some solutions. It is also a senior experience class, so we have fun, and it is not too serious or depressing.
